10m2 office build project – (#13)

Gap Filler is getting an office!

SHAC (Sustainable Habitat Challenge) from Dunedin were at work on a gap with their crew last week. Their organisation aims to showcase sustainable building practices and get young people motivated to make a difference to their community.

From Mon 23rd Jan until Sat 28 Jan, SHAC worked with a small group of young people to build a sub-consent (so, 10m2 footprint in total) building on a vacant site in Sydenham. This is SHAC’s first Christchurch project. Part of what SHAC do is gift the wee building upon completion to a charity or not-for-profit organisation. That’s where Gap Filler comes in. SHAC have designed a little office especially for Gap Filler and given it to us to use! Cool stuff! The office still needs it’s interior done at the time of writing (30 Jan) but we hope to be in there and working by Feb 7.

The people who built the office were a mix of professional builders and architects as well as people under the age of 24 who helped out to learn new skills throughout the week. Many of the materials used are recycled or recovered from demolitions. Steel and Tube, Pump House, Dulux, Clyde and Bennie, Skelly Holdings, Southern Demolition, Window Marketplace, Terra Lana, Addington Demolition, The Press and Christchurch Demolition and Salvage have donated materials thus far and the land has been generously made available to us by Ascot TV who are now further down Colombo Street in new premises.

The office at 404 Colombo Street, Sydenham will be relocatable with the use of a Hi-Ab and our plan is to move after about 3 – 6 months to a new gap, depending on the landowners and their plans. To start with, we will be drawing power from a nearby business but certainly aspire to be off-grid in the future. We also plan to tap into local wireless signals where possible.

BIIIIIG ups to Tim and Lani at SHAC and Regenerate for all their work. And thanks to Nate at the White Elephant for putting us in touch.
